National sports day

National sports day is a public holiday celebrated in various countries to honour the national sports team and sports traditions of those countries. on this day people from different age groups take a part in sports like Kabaddi marathon, basketball ,hockey, football extra. 

National sports day 2020

National sports day is observed on 29 August 2020 National sports day 2020 is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend major Dhyan Chand. National sports day also stresses the need  to stay fit and healthy. the main objective of national sports days to spread awareness of the importance of sports and daily activities in our life. 

The government has used this day to launch various sports schemes, including the khelo India movement, whichwas announced by prime minister Narendra Modi in 2018. 

National sports day: 29th August. 

Every year 29th August has been observed as National sports day in India the first national day was celebrated on 29th August 2012,on the birth anniversary of Major dhyanchand who was the star of hockey team of India. 

This day was selected in the prospective of honouring the great hockey player and as an occasion to hona the country's sporting heroes with the awards like Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award, Arjuna award, Dhyan Chand award Dronacharya award. 

History of National sports day. 

National sports day is also known as rashtriya Khel Divas. The day was first celebrated in the year 2012. National sports day is the centre of attraction for the sports lovers of the country. the main reason behind celebrating National sports day lies in championing the spirit of sportsmanship and propagating the message of various sports. 

Who is Dhyan Chand?

Dhyan Chand Singh is popularly known as the wizard of Indian hockey. Dhyan was born on 29th August 1905 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. he has secured over 400 international goals and 1,000 goal in his entire career in 22 years during the period from 1926 to 1948. under the leadership of the owners and the Indian hockey team has achieved several victories. He has lead India into 3 Olympic gold medal in 1928, 1932 and 1936. 

By winning the Olympic gold medal on three occasion and marked his position in the page of history. During the 1936 Berlin Olympics in the out set of World war II, Adolf Hitler was visibly impressed by seeing this "hockey ki jadugar" meaning wizard, at play. Dhyan Chand is remembered for his taict refusal in saluting the great director during the hockey final against Germany in 1936. Hitler was overwhelmed by Singh's performance and his desire to buy Singh's hockey stick out of administration for the  three time Olympic gold medalist. 

In a bid tu hona Dhyan Chand,the Government of India renamed the national stadium in Delhi to Dhyan Chand National stadium in 2002. Also the prestigious Aligarh Muslim University has named a hostel after the hockey wizard. Among the various awards Chand born throughout his life he has also conferred with the Padma Bhushan award he was the third civilian to get the honour. 

How is national sports day celebrated. 

The birth anniversary of Dhyan Chand is celebrated extensively at the national level the Government of India pays tribute to such a legendary player by celebrating his birthday since 2012. On the national sports day. 

1). The President of India gives out all sports related award like Arjuna award Dronacharya award and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award to hona sports person and coaches who have made the national proud of their service in their respective sports

2).  The day is celebrated with great fun fair with walkathons and football tournament held across the country.   

3).   In the first year of celebration, FICCIhead sporting events all across India with the help of the ministry of youth affairs and other sporting bodies. 

4).   On this special day, players from different age groups take part in various sports events like Kabaddi ,marathon basketball, hockey excetra. 

5).    Every year,tu athletes are nominated by the selection committeefor children sports award in the highest sporting honour in the country. 

What else happened on the National sports day. 

On this day, the Nation confes its stars with recognization like the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna award, Dhyan Chand award,and the Dronacharya award at a ceremony held at the iconic Rashtrapati bhavan. 

Fit India movement

In 2019,prime minister Narendra Modi has launched 'fit India campaign'on the occasion of National sports day.  The nationwide campaign aims to encourage people to  incalculate physical activity and sports in their everyday lives. Under this, a committee comprised of several government officials, members of the IOA(Indian Olympic association), national sports federation,private bodies and fitness promoters was formed to advise the government on the fit India movement.
